Character

Basal cell setation [99]

Description

The basal cell is delineated anteriorly by the submarginal vein, distally by the basal vein (character 142), and posteriorly by the mediocubital fold. The amount of setation and setal pattern within the basal cell varies widely across different taxa, complicating coding of the character. Therefore, we scored only complete, even setation (state 0) versus the setation being variably reduced to entirely absent. Anything less than complete setation was coded as state 1, even if the apical third of the cell is setose. Setation of the basal cell does not include the vannal region, which is posterior to the mediocubital fold and often bare. Citations: Noyes & Hayat (1994: 48); Gibson (1995: 32, 55).
