Character

Flagellomere one shape [5]

Description

The size and shape of the first flagellomere is one of the most widely used characters in Chalcidoidea, proving useful for species-level description to family-group classification. A cylindrical F1 that is as long as broad or longer is considered plesiomorphic. A ring-like F1 can be discoid in shape (much shorter than long) or wedge-shaped (found in some Aphelinidae and Trichogrammatidae). The acute dorsal process on F1 (state 2) can be difficult to assess, but is known only from Agaonidae (Grandi, 1929). We only recognize a single anellus in species where the projection is transversely subdivided.
