Number of flagellomeres between F1 and clava (= funicular segments) in female [8]

Description

The funicle in Chalcidoidea is typically defined as the number of segments between the anellus (F1) and the clava. In Eucharitini, some Mymaridae and Aphelininae, F1 is absent, and the count is between the pedicel and clava. The funicle is usually 3 or 4 segmented in taxa with reduced antennal segments, and 7 or 8 segmented in those with a fuller complement. Species of some taxa (Aditrochus, Espinosa, Orasema) do not have a fused clava and can have as many as 9 segments between the anellus and terminal segment (F13). Only Eucharissa (Eucharitidae) can have more (coded herein as the maximum of 9). Anelliform flagellomeres beyond F1 are considered as funicular segments, and therefore Nasonia vitripennis has 7 funicular segments in females under our interpretation (not the traditional count of 6). In Coccobius, the count may be either 3 (probable) or 4 depending on the interpretation of having 1 or 2 fused anelli. The larger number of funicular segments (7) is presumed to be plesiomorphic (Bouček and Heydon, 1997).
